Let’s define ultimate! Well, in the case of a walk in wardrobe, it should be just as beautiful as it is useful. Ideally, a perfect walk in wardrobe should tick all these boxes: Spacious (although, you can make a small walk in closet work too), well-thought-out accessories (not just for clothes but for garment and storages), good lighting, practical design and complimenting colours. Now don’t worry if there's lack of space or if the visioned interior design is over your budget. There’s many ways around it to still make it look amazing.
How should you design your walk in wardrobe?
Here’s the main elements to consider when planning a walk in closet.
Colours
So many options! You can create an airy and fresh feeling to it with a white colour or you can get fun with a bold paint colour on the walls. Going with a deeper, richer texture makes the closet really stand out. Also, keep in mind that the colour of your walk in closet has a big impact on how you perceive your clothes. What colour are your clothes? If you wear a lot of bright coloured and whites, then go far dark finish as the clothes will stand out more. And if you wear a lot of black and dark tones, go for white as it creates this neutral background for your clothing.
Mirrors
An excellent way to make the illusion of a larger space. If you have the space, attach a full length mirror to the wall but if not, install it to a door. It’s practical, an important detail in a dressing room and will also create depth in a room as the light bounces and makes it look bigger.
Lighting
The right lighting can dramatically impact the overall functionality of a space. A strategic placement of the lights can create a lovely ambience. Lights can be installed in many ways. For functional purpose install it in internal spots and make use of light strips. And for the ambient, add backlighting panels inside the closet. If you want to make a statement or be bolder with the design, hang a chandelier or illuminate the base of the closet, it gives a floating look. Or if you want to feel calm and whimsy, string up twinkly lights. The possibilities are endless.
Accessories, organising details
Organising shelving for walk in closet depends on your preferences and lifestyle. What’s the length and width of your clothes, how many pairs of shoes do you own, what sorts of accessories do you wear, etc. It’s important to organise everything so it makes sense, is easy to access and utilises the space. Using accessories is not just for hanging clothes, it’s a clever way to store shoes, ties, scarves, hats, jewellery and other items.
For wardrobe interior you can opt for rails, pull out racks, internal drawers and storage baskets. Rails are designed for hanging clothes. So take a look at your outfits. How much clothing can you hang and how much can you fold? It’s a good method to maximise the storage space. Internal drawers are for folded clothes. We suggest to install it with clear or frosted glass (which makes a nice decoration) so that you can see what’s inside. Pull out racks are good for trousers as well as shoes, belts, ties and other accessories. This way the items are easily displayed and accessible. And last but not least, the storage baskets. They come in various depths and you can integrate that into the closet interior or have a separate dedicated area for it.
