What characterises Italian decor?

Italians know their craft when it comes to art, fashion, architecture and design. When you think of timeless and talented designers, your mind goes instantly to Italian style. So it’s no surprise a lot of us want to imbue our own homes with Italian decor, such as antique wall art, neutral colours, ceramic tiles in bathroom, and of course making your dining area/kitchen the heart of your home. Italian is equivalent to beauty and style. It’s not always easy to create that effortless Italian interior design but it’s definitely doable. Let’s dive into our tips and tricks on how to design an Italian oasis in your home.

What makes it an Italian decor?

You can opt for old world-style Italian decor or more modern approach with minimalist Italian look. In this blog post, we’ll focus on the latter. Three things that sum up Italian decor: classic good taste, minimalism and high-quality luxury elements. It’s all about pairing minimalism with first-class details. And it doesn’t have to be super expensive, our team of experts know how to create an Italian interior design on a smaller budget.

Choosing neutral colour palette

Neutral base is very important when it comes to Italian interior design. Pairing a light beige and grey hue creates a warm, calm feeling. That way you can use more brighter colours to create that wow effect. A popular choice is shades of green, such as olive, pear or emerald. Also, rustic red, golden yellow and deep purple. If you browse through pinterest, you’ll find a common theme. Neutral walls and bright Italian furniture, for example sofa in olive shade in the middle of the room, making an excellent statement piece.

Antique wall art

What’s an Italian home without their art? Murals are an easy way to bring Italian scene to life. Choose something that speaks to you. Something that showcases your style, taste and make sure it goes with the overall colour scheme. For example, a painting of a Venetian sunset in your master bedroom or an amazing view of a winery in your dining room. This is the part where you can get really creative.

Ceramic tiles in the kitchen and bathroom

You can’t go wrong here. Tiles create an instant elegant feeling. And adding Italian marble to your kitchen, will just add the touch of luxury you’re after. Modern homes often have a marble flooring and marble stone covering their walls.

Focus on small details

Little details will make the difference. These include switches, table runners, candle holders etc. Change out your basic switch plates and replace them with something Italian themed. That would be wall plates with fun designs, like grape vines, fruits, vegetables and florals. Decorate your kitchen with Italian laced table runners and decorative jars. Focus on adding small bits to every room.

Wine racks

My personal favourite, showcasing a beautiful selection of wines as Italians do love their wines and some of the best originate from there. There’s so many fun options how to do that. You can install a wall hanging wine rack or display it on counter-top. You can add some beautiful artsy painting behind it, such as flowing vines.

Statement lights

Italians are known for their chandeliers. But you don’t necessarily have to go over the top with it. There’s a lot of modern choices out there. Italian decor is all about layering lighting to bring out the best of all areas in the room. For instance, pairing chandelier with wall scones and table top lighting.

Italian furniture

One word. Leather. It’s the last piece of a puzzle, a fantastic way to bring luxury in your home. But if you’re looking for more of a modern Italian interior design, choose an oversized sofa in soft yellow colour or in olive green shade. As mentioned previously, make sure it goes with the overall colour scheme. Italian furniture tends to be more rustic with different textures on surfaces.
